60SecOps — WSL 2 + Ubuntu Command Sheet

WINDOWS POWERSHELL / TERMINAL

Install WSL:
wsl --install

List available Linux distributions:
wsl --list --online

Install Ubuntu:
wsl --install -d Ubuntu

List installed distributions and WSL versions:
wsl --list --verbose

Launch Ubuntu:
wsl


UBUNTU TERMINAL

Check the installed Ubuntu version:
cat /etc/os-release

Check the Linux kernel version:
uname -r

Update packages:
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

Create a test file:
echo "Created inside Linux on Windows" | tee wsl-demo.txt

Open the current Linux folder in Windows File Explorer:
explorer.exe .

Check Python:
python3 --version

Create and open a demo folder:
mkdir -p ~/wsl-demo
cd ~/wsl-demo

Create a basic webpage:
printf '%s\n' '<h1>Linux is running inside Windows</h1>' '<p>Powered by WSL 2</p>' > index.html

Start the Python web server:
python3 -m http.server 8000

Open in Windows:
http://localhost:8000

Install GNOME Text Editor:
sudo apt install gnome-text-editor -y

Launch GNOME Text Editor:
gnome-text-editor
